well, it appears my iPod died. it just crapped out on me. basically it wont turn on. it doesnt matter whether its plugged into the wall or the computer. it wont hard reset. its just gone.
its still under warranty so im not too worried. i dropped it off at the UCLA computer store where i bought it when they had them selling for $270. i guess thats what i get for paying $130 less than everyone else, huh?
anyone else have mysterious deaths of their iPods?

Mine was dead right out of the box, it wouldn't charge or anything. Luckily the Apple Store was nice and gave me an instant replacement. No problems with the new one. You're lucky yours failed within the first 90 days, what a skimpy support period!

I had the same thing happen with two iPods. My first iPod, purchased in November (with CompUSA's warranty), died after about three months. It acted exactly as yours did. I exchanged it for another one that failed after two weeks . Needless to say, I was a little angry, so I threw it against the wall. The impact was forceful enough to cause the silver back to pop off, and the hd/battery to come out of the iPod. After looking at the pieces for a minute, I decided to put the poor thing back together. The battery has power cord that connects to the iPod's circuit board, and the hd is connected with a small IDE-like cable. When I plugged everything back in and put the back cover back on, the iPod powered up fine, but flashed an icon that indicated it couldn't find the hard disk (a folder with an exclamation point, I think). I think the only problem, originally, was that the connecter between the battery cable and circuit board was loose. The hd was surely broken when I threw the iPod against the wall.
That's just my theory for the whole thing. I'd like to think I learned something from doing something completely stupid.

Thanks to the reader who suggested opening the ipod and disconnecting and reconnecting the battery cable. I did so and my dead (for weeks) ipod fired up and is working fine. It was a Christmas gift and just days beyond the warranty when it died.

Thanks to your reports from other readers, by following their instructions on opening the iPod and "resetting" the battery, I was able to avoid an expensive Apple repair bill. Chalk up another "Lazarus" iPod.

Add 2 to the list. 2 Dead Christmas iPods here, at the same address! 1 was replaced by Apple within the 90 Days, and 1 was replaced by Apple outside the 90 days, but paid for by VISA's warranty doubling protection. Something is definitely wrong.
