I think that Apple should come out with a Standard for transferring Audio over Bluetooth. I'm sure there would be enough bandwidth. The format should also support functions, like next track, last track, etc, and info, like song titles, battery level and whatnot. With an open standard, aftermarket radio makers could start supporting it their radios. With the standard open, other MP3 players could also start supporting it. Then just imagine, put your iPod in your pocket, with no ear buds or ANYTHING plugged into it. Jump into your car, and you can automatically start playing music from it, using your radio to control it, and all nice, neat and wirelessly.
I think this would be perfect, better than perfect. I would go buy an iPod TODAY if such features were supported in my factory radio. Then I would be able to use my factory steering wheel radio controls, which is a big deal to me.

The bandwidth is 1 MBPS right? So thats about 125K/sec. So it is too slow to send uncompressed audio. But if it just sent the mp3 file compressed, and the radio decoded it, then you would have more than enough bandwidth, much more. And then you could also include the space for all the information transfer, and commands. I think this would be the greatest thing! Instead, for now ,I'll have to settle for a crude attempt to get AUX audio in through my CD Changer input, then if it works, ill buy an iPod to use :-D

Just to say I completely agree with you. I'm not so technical to understand if this is really possible, but this is and idea I had months ago like you... My iPod is the main way for me to listen to the (my) music. I mean, I use it with the headphone, I use it connected with a cable to the home stereo, I use it in the car (I made a special connection to the car's amplifier, I do not have a car stereo, just the iPod and an amplifier). When I go to some friend's home I'd like to connect the iPod to my friend's home stereo just to share my listenings. The FM transmitter is a possibility but it is noisy and not immediate, so try to image a Bluetooth capabilities on the iPod and on the home stereo. With no hassles you can beam to the home stereo, to the car stereo and so on. No cables, no FM trasmitters with noises in the music. I think this can be a great solution. I can see in the future home stereos and cars stereos with bluetooth capabilities builted in. Maybe it can be made already today, with a Bluetooth receiver with two RCA plug for the home/car stereo and a firewire/bluetooth adapter for the iPod. I written this to Apple with no answers anyway. Maybe they are already thinking of it.
