I'm trying to install an external USB fax modem, but I cannot get my DP 450 MHz G4 running OS 9.1 to recognize it. Instead, I get the message "<no serial ports available>" in the modem control panel, and my FaxElite software does not see it either. (Before someone suggests that I just use the internal modem, I should perhaps say that since my computer was a BTO machine and I use a cable modem for Internet connections, I have no internal modem.) The Apple System Profiler sees the modem, but for some reason I cannot get it to hook up with a modem port.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

If it is working right, then in the Modem control panel, the location of the modem should not read modem port, but USB. If in the modem control panel the location of the modem is modem port, click on it and see if there are any other choices. If you have a G4 using cable modem, that should use the ethernet port, leaving the modem port available. It's usually covered by a metal plate. This modem when BTO comes with STF fax software.
