I just bought a Maxtor Diamondmax 10.2 gig IDE drive for my beige G3/266 desktop. I want to install it as a slave device, since I don't have a zip drive in the drive bay. However, the Maxtor drive came with no screws or mounting brackets, so I'm not sure if I have to get a mounting kit to secure the drive in the bay. It seems like the bay is neither 3.5" nor 5.5." Does anyone know how I can install the drive?

You need to get an Apple Service provider to order a mounting kit (they may call it a sled) - you can get either an upper tray sled or a lower tray (they are different). I would get the upper in case you with to add a zip drive someday. (The lower tray is where the zip drive would be.)

Oh yeah, if you don't have a service provider near you, Other World Computing at http://www.macsales.com has them.

Hi,

You should check which revision of beige G3 you've got as the early ones do not support slave drives. I wanted to add a slave drive myself but cannot because of this situation (curses!).

Check out the G3 zone of www.xlr8yourmac.com where there is an extensive discussion of doing just what you want.

Good luck!

Edward
