I'm using a Quantegy 80 gig firewire external, and it won't mount. Repairing disks comes up as an "invalid b-tree node". I was looking around for some fixes and all I could find was DiskWarrior (90 bucks). As it is my brother's drive and I was just hoping to use the left over space, is there any way to remedy the problem without spending money? If I restore the disk do I lose all data?

1. Did you try disk utility? Is it a Mac OS formatted volume?
2. If you format it, it's gone. True dat.

I had this issue with the main drive on my powermac a couple of weeks back. Disk utility was unable to repair, nor verify it. After getting a copy of DW and running it from the boot disc, I guess it fixed the "tree" and then it work.

Since this is an external HD and not your main OS drive, try to see if you can run applejack's utilities on your external drive. Not to sure if you can but worth giving it a shot.

Is running disk warrior from the boot disk much different from running it via another mac in 'target disk mode'?

I have two macbooks here and whenever I run diskwarrior, the data that I want to extract doesn't seem to be in the preview drive.

I am awaiting the arrival of the boot disc.

No, it's the same app, regardless of where you run it.
