I have an old 1998 iMac G3 and want to know the purpose and fuction of an IrDA cable and would this have to do with my connection issue to my ISP?

Just got my information from the apple support messageboards and found that it was only used on the original Bondi iMacs it was for an infrared communcation with the Palm OS. But has nothing to do with my connectivity issues

"IrDA" is the infrared "handheld to handheld" comm interface. It could never have anything to do with how you may or may not connect with your ISP.

If you post exactly what your problem is in the Networking forum, we can probably help you out. It is almost certain NOT to be something specific to your computer.

IrDA is/was a protocol for short range, infrared device communication. At the time, WIFI was far less common. Bluetooth was nonexistent. Palm devices had IrDA ports; so did several printers. The HP 5M laserprinter comes to mind: I used to use IrDA to print from both a Palm device and a Pismo.

I don't know of anything that is using it now but I suppose it could be used for legacy devices such as printers from the same time period as your G3.
