Help!!!

Every game I have tried to run freezes when running with the Rage card. The demo's included with the card
freeze (Nanosaur & Future Cop). Also the games I already own ( Tomb Raider II & Dark Vengeance) freeze
shortly after starting. I have already downloaded and installed the driver updates from ATI's website. I also
downloaded and installed the upgrade to OpenGL from APPLE...

I am currently using a 6500, 128Mb. everything else seems to be ok except when it comes to running these
games...

***update*** I started over again from scratch...uninstalled all files, including open GL and all of the ATI files...Even
zapped pram for the heck of it. (and of course reinstalled all drivers)

Still didn't help. I tried Nanosaur again and it froze 2 minutes into playing. Better then the other games I'm
trying to run (see above)they freeze right after the game starts (the game intro's play fine). Are there settings
that I'm missing??
Thanks.

Steve

To be clear: did you install the Rage Orion patch intended for the 6500? I know it is specifically aimed at a 'hang at startup' problem that some 6500's have with a Rage Orion card... but who knows?

Ok, here's the reply I got back from ATI support thru email (edited). The fix that was suggested
did not work..

You'll see in the directions below, the part about creating an extesion set, the tech only suggests
turning on the ATI extentions, wouldn't you need to have the Quickdraw extentions on too if you
wanted to run tomb raider, future cop, or any other game under graphic acceleration? Oh yeah, the
problem report I sent had almost all of my extentions on, I ran out of ideas so I turned everything
on... Now onto the email

Dear Steve,

Thank you for your email. Your problem report confirms that your software is
installed correctly.

Regarding your computer games freezing when launched:

Your steps up to now seem fine. However, we still have a few suggestions
that may help you.

The easy installer for Apple OpenGL overwrites some ATI Extensions. Remember
to run ATI Universal Installer AFTER Apple OpenGL if you haven't done so
already.

Also, there are a lot of 3rd party extensions in your extensions folder. In
the event that a conflict is taking place, we have suggested a minimal
extension set below that may help you troubleshoot.

Should you require any further information or assistance, do not hesitate to
contact us again.

(edit)

Creating an Extension Set with only MacOS base extensions and ATI Display
extensions

1. Open Control Panels->Extension Manager
2. From the drop down list of predefined sets, select MacOS xxx base.
3. From The File menu, select Duplicate Set.
4. Name the set "ATI Test".
5. From The View Menu, select "As Packages"

Now when you scroll down the list of extensions, you should find a package
called ATI Multimedia Component

6. Enable all entries in this group.
7. click restart.

If your problem is resolved, then one of your installed applications has
created an extension that conflicts with your display drivers. Add one
extension at a time and restart until you isolate the conflict; then leave
that extension disabled and report the problem to ATI Technical Support.

ok... try this: disable the Display Enabler extension in the Extensions Manager and disable the GXGraphics extension (part of QuickDrawGX)

maybe maybe... fingers are crossed...

Thanks -

I think I'm going to have to cross more than just my fingers to get this card to work right...

I dont have QuickdrawGX installed and no display enabler either. This is getting strange.

One thing I did discover is that if I change the size of the screen resolution in the Future Cop set-up the game plays for a bit longer before freezing. I also tried this in some other games too. It helped in some, but all still freeze.

Could this be a hardware problem????

A friend has the same computer as you and never got it to work. He took it back and got a different card and it works fine. So it might be a defective card... Good Luck.

Sorry to say I haven't found a fix, but I guess enough people have complained. Earlier this week MacFixit or MacNewsNetwork (macnn.com) had a short article stating that ATI is finally looking into the problem. ATI has a webpage dedicated to the problem. No fixes yet, the page states they are working on the problem and lists some of the games affected.

Here's the link to ATI's site.

Good luck,
Steve
