(i hope for under 200.00$ too) GOD DAMN MICROSOFT TO HELL!

Suprz,

I share your dislike of Microsoft, but never fear, there are plenty of camera compatible with Macs. You will limit yourself somewhat with the $200 limit. Sony, Kodak, Olympus, Nikon, etc. are all Mac compatible.

I prefer Kodak myself. I have the DC280 and think it's excellent. The current equivalent, the DC3400 is also a great camera. It lists for $399 so it's more than you'll want, but they have lower models. Mine has both serial and USB for Macs.

Olympus has USB only if you buy a separate USB card reader, otherwise it's serial (kinda backwards I think, only supporting the older technology out of the box). Sony will have USB, but no serial in the CyberShot series, and the Mavica series uses floppy disks, so you'll need an external floppy drive on a newer Mac. Nikon I think is only USB for Macs.

You didn't say whether you needed USB or serial; the cameras I mention here are all USB, as far as I know.

I bought a Fuji FinePix 2400 last December for around 349.00 (US). It may be cheaper by now. It has a 2.1 Megapixel CCD and a 3x optical zoom, and I am absolutely thrilled with it. It's USB-only and comes with the cable to hook it to your Mac. Fuji also has a 2.1MP camera without the zoom and a 1.3 (?) MP, I believe, that are USB that would be cheaper.

I think HP has some USB/Mac-compatible cameras that are pretty reasonable as well.

i have a kodak DC280 as well. no problems with it so far. look on ebay or look for a place that sells refurbished cameras, mine was a refurb actually. if that doesnt do it for you i remember seeing some digital camera at target for like 120 bucks, it was kinda aimed at teens and probably isnt a very good camera, but i remember it being cheap and mac compatible. look on c|net for good buys too. (thats how i found the refurb one i got). sub 200 dollars isnt going to merit you very much camera unless you find a great great deal.

a third vote for the kodak. The access software is reasonably intuitive and stable (although it's always better not to have other apps open) and the image quality is excellent.

My 280 was expensive, but my sister just picked up the newest version for like $250. I think at Walmart! (yike...)

my vote would be for olympus. i have a d460 which is incredible.
but a bit above your price range.

in my case i needed to buy a $30 smartmedia/usb card reader in addition to the camera, plus two sets of rechargeable batteries.

both were worth every penny.

essentially i went with olympus as opposed to kodak, sony, and others based on the quality of the lens. but all in all most digicams are about the same. for $200, check ebay.

Check out The Digital Camera Resource Page, an incredibly informative site that reviews and gives details on just about any camera out there. They also have comparative pricing (and also links to companies) which give you a good barometer of what the market price for different cameras is at any given time.
On a personal note, I have found my Canon cameras to be incredibly easy to use, portable, and give great quality shots. I have also used Kodak cameras, and find them equally easy to use. What I like about my canon is the small form factor.
best of luck,
dave

Has anyone tried out the Image Capture app that came with OS X? Does it work with any USB-camera or does the camera have to be supported in order to work?
