I am buying a new HDD and I was looking at one of these two enclosures:

I'm a little firewire illiterate, sorry, but does my laptop need extra hardware for fw400/fw800? All I have is the 4-pin slot.

4 pin is Firewire 400 without power, so you want the first enclosure (the second is a waste of money for you) and a 6to4 pin adapter like Newegg.com - VIGOR FWA-AC-01 Firewire Adapter 6-Pin Female to 4-Pin Male - OEM

Since you've got 4 pin Firewire, I'm guessing this isn't on a Mac...

Yes it is on my Inspiron 9300. I have an iMac too though - just recently got into macs. I just have alot of stuff on my PC that I want backed up. I use it mostly to run the programs for my engineering classes now (the teachers only have PC versions).
