My hard disk has apparently decided that it no longer likes to spin down. While it will happily spin down when I sleep the entire computer, it is impossible to coax it to during operation.

When I select "spin down HD" in the control strip, it shortly thereafter changes to "hard disk is off" in grayed out letters.. however, by placing my ear near the machine I can tell this is not the case.. In fact, there is no discernable change at all when the disk is "spun down". The results are the same when the disk should be spinning down from idle time.

This problem did not always occur, I distinctly remember my disk spinning down in the past; it is only this past week or so.

So has my drive gone defective?

Just a thought... could it be the fan? Or, another thought, do you have file sharing on? Filesharing sometimes causes the hard drive to continue spinning...
