Some hard drives will run with write verification on for the first 10 or 20 power cycles -- see if performance picks up after you've powered your computer on and off 20 times over the next few weeks.

"make sure that you are using the ULTRA cable that should have came with the hard drive. Blue to motherboard, black to drive and gray to slave."

I e-mailed Maxtor tech-support and this was their reply. Haven't tried it yet but this probably is the problem! Sorry to bother everyone! How silly of me...
