I'm thinking of getting a CD-RW drive for my PowerBook/Future computers. Preferably 12x, and less than a few hundred dollars.
USB, Firewire, or SCSI, but preferably USB/Firewire as my future computers won't have SCSI on them.

Can anyone recommend anything?

Yamaha is probably the best out there. No matter what, go FireWire. USB is limited to 4X because of it's speed, and isn't really reliable above 2X anyway.

Yamaha is the best, without contest.
FireWire is the only way to go nowadays.

I recommend the CRW8824 which is 8*8*24, but the CRW2100 "lightspeed" is probably more to your liking, at 16*10*40.
