I remember a few years back frequently reading that when buying an external firewire storage device it was good to get one with the Oxford 911 chipset. Is this still the best, or are they all pretty equivalent now? Also, can anyone recommend a good 3.5'' enclosure?

The Oxford family of chipsets (911, 912, 922, etc) has always been the gold standard for Firewire chipsets. There is still a lot of variation in chipset quality, but there are a few good brands.

Here's an Oxford 911 enclosure for $33: Newegg.com - BYTECC ME-720F External Enclosure - Retail

But you're pretty safe with any 5/5 rated enclosure on Newegg.com - Once You Know, You Newegg
