I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade my Firewire Sony CRX 140E By replacing the internal mechanism with a 24x sony one?
I have seen the internal version for less than £60, and it would cost me double this for a new FW drive.
Any suggestions?

Would my iMac recognise that is was a 24x burner, or would it still think it was 8x?
My only worry was if there was some kind of BIOS on the internat curcit of the external drive that sent this signal to my iMac.
Thanks
Adam

Your external FW(iLink) drive consists of an IDE drive and an enclosure with an IDE-FireWire bridge.
Any IDE(EIDE, ATA-66, ATA100, ATA-133) drive will work in the box.
I have a couple of cases from ADS that I swap hard drives in and out of for back-ups.

I've read several places (including XLR8yourmac.com) that you can't update the CDRW in sony firewire cases (apparently the firmware will only recognise the drive that is in the case).
However...my sony 12/8/32x firewire drive (I think the model # is ilink 1600) died, and sony wouldn't repair/replace it under warranty. As much as I didn't want to buy another sony drive, I got a great deal on a sony 32x CDRW. I put it in the case and it works fine with toast - I've burned several CDs at 24 and 32x.
Check XLR8yourmac - your case might not work with another drive.

you could always try to find your own case if it won't work in sony's case. they're relatively cheap.

I could do, but the whole point was to upgrade my existing drive without the expense of a whole new unit.
Thanks anyway.
