I had a look, but I couldn't see this asked anywhere else.

Can anyone tell me what the iPod's like when it comes to gaps between songs?
I realise that it preloads every song into RAM first, but does it preload the next song on an album before the current one's finished?

the gap is noticable (obviously) but quite short. the ipod's got 32 megs of ram, so it's got about eight songs (depending on encoding...) loaded into ram at any one time. it's a flawless (well, anyway) little machine.

heh.
ipod.

I don't know about the gap being "noticeable". It sounds no different than a cd. If you're playing a cd that some of the tracks carry over into the next one seamlessly it sounds the exact same on the iPod. It only plays what it is given, if it's given pauses then it plays them, if it's given straight songs it doesn't insert a gap.

as i understand it, the question is does the ipod load songs into memory in such a way that it never pauses between songs? the answer to that question is no. what the ipod does is load songs into its memory. once it finishes playing these songs, it loads another batch into memory. between the two batches there is a noticeable pause as the new songs are being moved between the hard drive and the ipod's memory.

which is what i was saying. there is a gap, but it's not that bad. there's been major discussion here (somewhere) about the nature of the caching, and whether/why it is/isn't group or on-demand.
we (i think) have come to the conclusion that (unfortunately) it's group.

why? i don't know.
do i wish it were on-demand? yes. would that affect battery life? probably.
do i love my ipod anyway?
of course!
it's rockin.
