I recently bought an Intuos 2, it's 8" X 12". I love the idea of being able to draw truly freehand using more fluid movements than a mouse but there is a terrible hand/eye coordination problem using a tablet, I think you should try one out for a while before you buy one. I find mine most useful for small bits of photo retouching and editing rather than out and out drawing.

It was quite expensive, about $500, they haven't been very forthcoming with drivers for OS X (still in the Beta stages).

It might be worth considering the Cintiq range they do as well, (although these are mega expensive) the ability to draw directly to the screen would be so much more useful for me and I kind of wish I'd saved my pennies and gone for one of those.
If it rained soup I'd have a fork in my hand!

Tablets are the only way to work if you're doing graphic work, particularly Photoshop stuff.

It'll feel weird at first - you're so used to using a mouse that anything else will be very odd, but ignore this and work past it. Really. And it's easy to get used to using a tablet because your hand is accustomed to using a pen away from the computer.

I have the graphire 2. love it. I tend to turn it at a 90degree angle and it feels totally normal, it's just a pain to go back to a real mouse. it's 5x7 or something and it works great, the hand eye thing is hard to get used to though.

hi i just got the intous 2 4x5
the pen seems great in photoshop but awkward for general use.
i can't decide if i should return it and get the bigger 6x8. I think 4x5 should be good for most stuff though.
one problem I have with the mouse is that it sticks to the sides of the screen. Like a magnet. It's really annoying trying to use the dock and the menu. Does anybody know how to fix this?
