im interested in getting one, the 5GB version. My question is this, can i have my music on it, and NOT have it on m Mac ? Connect it to the mac via FW and play the music off it ? and then unplug it and use it as a portable music player ?
i dont want to have a copy of my music on the iPod and my PBG4. I'd like to use the iPod as a music drive if you may. is that possible ?

Yes, you most certainly CAN do that, and don't tell him otherwise! All you have to do is sync the iPod to your computer once, get all your MP3s onto it, and then turn synching off. Then delete all the mp3s from your computer, and they'll stay on the iPod. When you get new ones on your computer, plug in your iPod, drag the mp3s onto it (in iTunes, not onto the icon on the desktop) watch them transfer, and delete them off your HD! That's it. VERY doable.

Yes, of course you can. Launch iTunes with you iPod plugged in, click the iPod preferences button at the bottom, and select "Manually manage songs and playlists". You can then just use it as a music hard drive, copying songs through iTunes then deleting them.

Cheers!

I'm told, however, that the drive in the iPod isn't up to the task of
running continuously for hours and hours.

I love my iPod but I'm a little concerned.

When you run it via iTunes, doesn't it run the drive continuously?

Or does it allow it to stream 32megs, then play the 32 and stream
off the disk again?

I know it runs with the drive spinning part of the time when run
remotely, but I don't know about when docked with a Mac.

Nobody seems to be able to tell me and with the music cranked
you can't really hear the drive spinning.

Does it spin continuously or does it do what it does when operating seperate from the computer?

I'd like to delete my mp3 directory off my 80 gig drive myself....

I am not sure if the drive stays active or not but I pretty much have my ipod plugged in all the time on the three different computers I travel to most - work, school, and home. (I just love that I can work on my homework anywhere as well as listen to all my music.) My Ipod doesn't seem to have any problems from being plugged in almost 10 hours a day. Where did you hear that there were problems with that?

ok i dont have an ipod but as far as the HD goes its just a regular ole laptop drive id take a good guess at, the HD in my ibook is spun up day and night no problem, if the ipod had to load 32megs spin down and then spin back up for every 32meg chunk it would surely be worse, id only let it spin down if you know your not gonna touch it for an hour or more other wise id rather force it to stay spun up eheh.

oh from what i read you should Really buy it at compUSA(i hate them) and get the extended warranty... 30 bucks and your coverd for 2 years or something sounds totally worth it.

Phang, don't worry about it. You wouldn't believe how many TILs I had to go through to figure it out. It really should be better explained in the iTunes help.

Cheers!

Yes, of course. When you plug the Pod in, it will appear with all of your music in iTunes, and will also mount on the desktop, which is where you can put any files that you want (in fact, it comes with a copy of iTunes on it).
