I'm looking for a cheap external DVD reader for an old iMac DV 500mhz. It only has a CD-RW drive internally and I'm looking upgrade it to Tiger and give it to one of my nephews.
Does anybody have a experience with a reliable external drive that would work with this Mac?

Well, I've got 10.4.8 running on my old 1999 iMac DV SE 400mhz with 512mb RAM and surprisingly it is pretty zippy. Since the iMac in question is 500mz and has more RAM (640kb or 768kb-something like that-I'm too lazy to turn it on now and check), I'm guessing it might be ok. It only cost $7.50 so I don't think I can go wrong no matter what.

mduell,
I ordered the items you suggested.
They work great. Tiger is running very nicely on the new-old iMac.
Thanks for the great tip!

Glad yours works. As usual I'm late to reply but...
If you live near a Fry's, they have a Memorex model MRX-51OLE standalone FW/USB Dual-Layer burner for $50 after rebate. The sale runs about once a month and it works fine on a G3. It's dead quiet as well.

4 "Wintels", a MacBook, an iMac (G3 baby!), and a couple of iPods.
