When I burn CDs, noise/static/trouble shows up in the left channel.

Using:

OS9.1
Toast 4.1.2
AIFF Files
QPS Fire 8x4x32x
FireWire 2.7

How can I combat this undesired effect?

Hi Fats,

Hiss, buzz, and static often indicate a grounding problem. If your burning from an LP make sure you use the turn-tables ground-wire and connect it to your stereo receiver (for pre-amplication).

Check/clean all your plugs, connections, and try replacing/swapping your cables.

Have you dropped/banged your Mac or CDRW recently? Ground problems can be tricky, if you still have a hiss in your left channel after all the above checks you may wish to have an Apple-certified repair-type look at your Mac's sound circuits.

Good Luck, T.

The hiss only shows up on cds burned by the qps 8x4x32x. If I play other audio it's fine through the mac, and if I take the CD out of the puter and play it in a stereo, the hiss is there, so it seems pretty isolated to the burner.

Time to call QPS's tech support--hopefully your CDRW is still under warranty.

I use the Firewire-Yamaha 8824-CDRW with my Pismo. I've been very pleased with itso far-- after about 20 audio LP-to-CD burns using Toast Deluxe and CD-SpinDoctor.

Regards, T.

I'd want to know more about how the recording was made. It's extremely unlikely that the drive itself or even the burning software is to blame for this kind of problem.

This is a replacement burner for one with a broken write head. It's still under warranty. I want my money back to tell you the truth...

As far as the problem, I've made several types of audio CD:

MP3->audio CD
audio cd->audio CD (cd drive to burner direct)
audio cd-> AIFF on hard drive->audio cd

all have the same hiss in the left channel on any CD player.

All signs point to the burner or Toast, because the files are OK before the burn.

QPS by the way, is a ridiculous company. I got an email from the VP (Pierre Aboud) apologizing for their poor service etc, and the number he gave me to call him was out of service.

Thanks for the help.
