I have been wanting to get another laser printer to supplement my Brother 420CN AIO inkjet, with which I have been very pleased. The thing I'm trying to figure out is if I should go for color or just get black and white. Black and white seems like a prudent choice because I'd be using the inkjet for color anyway. On the other hand, color is coming down in price and is very tempting to have. Opinions?

I'd go with a color laser, but I don't have an inkjet to begin with. If you do get the color laser, I think you may find yourself not using the inkjet for anything but photos (which I print at Costco).
The HP Color LaserJet 2600N is on my to-buy list... $300 for the printer and about $60 for each of the toners when you need to replace them. Mac-compatible with USB and Ethernet (which is nice if you have a home network or a laptop on wifi).
Mac update estimates: MacBook Pro 1Q10 (quad core Nehalem [Clarksfield]); MacBook 1Q10 (Arrandale); MacBook Air 1Q10 (Arrandale LV); Mac Pro/Xserve 1Q10 (6 core Westmere, 64+GB RAM); iMac 3Q10 (quad core everywhere); Mac mini 2010

Thank you for the advice, mduell. I like the idea of an HP laser, but I was put off by the cost of the toner. I'll give it a second look.

If you want to print pictures, a color laser is a waste of money. It really depends on what you do, but you can get a solid bw laser for the same money (e. g. with PostScript and duplexer) … if that matters to you. I couldn't live without a duplexer, for instance, but that's just me.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I can't find an independent figure, but HP says the black toner lasts 2500 pages and the colors last 2000... probably at 5% coverage.

Oreo said it a bit more explicitly than I did, but I just want to reinforce that a color laser is not for printing photos. It looks great for document and line art, but for photos you either want an inkjet or prints at a store.

Okay, I made my laser printer decision - I got one to supplement my Brother inkjet. I bought from Buy.com the Lexmark e120n. Through Saturday it's still $79.99. Mine came a couple of days after I ordered it even though I selected free shipping. Setup was a snap - trouble free. It's a very small unit, it has great output, it's silent in standby and comparatively quiet during prints (no louder than an injket I'd say) and it has PPD files for most every OS. You can get the Tiger PPD installer here.
