Many typical 'consumer'- type of applications, such as word processors, email apps and web browsers require up and down scrolling, hence the wheel mouse.

But I seem to work with a lot of apps in which I need to scroll sideways, too.

Anyone heard of a mouse that had a two-axis sphere instead of the wheel? Alternatively, do you think it would be usable via a software hack which scrolls sideways when the wheel is being pressed while scrolling?

Just a thought.

My Logitech mouse lets you scroll horizontally if there is a horizontal scroll bar - just press option while scrolling (user-configurable button)

It would be cool to have a mouse with a mini trackball kind of thing instead of a scroll wheel.

... seems USB Overdrive supports scrolling while pressing, the OS X beta just came out. Cool.
