hi
I'm a web designer and my questions are:

how about the color accuracy of the LCD technology?
influence of time on LCD screen (time to see dead pixels on apple LCD screen???)???
Quality of the CRT 17' from apple???

if LCD is good for 2D/3D i buy a PBG4Ti and if it's not good i buy a PMG4/733Mhz.

[[[ how about the color accuracy of the LCD technology? ]]]

Apple LCDs don't have ColorSync, but the built-in calibration is said to be good.

[[[ influence of time on LCD screen (time to see dead pixels on apple LCD screen???)???]]]

Perhaps as soon as you open the box. Apparently, new Apple LCDs can have up to a half dozen or so dead pixels, but I've also read that many of them are *perfect* with no dead pixels. I'm too picky about my screen and didn't want to take the chance. Apple won't exchange monitors with dead pixels, and I would hate to have paid $4000 and been stuck with what I consider to be defective hardware.

[[[ Quality of the CRT 17' from apple??? ]]]

I just got one and I don't like it at all. The color and image quality are not even up to the standard of my 5 year old 17" Applevision. The screen is too bright (no brightness control!), colors look washed out, bold text is smeared, small images are pixellated, and Apple dropped the 1152 x 870 mode in favor of a weird 1056 x 792 mode (basically the same as the 1024 x 768 mode. What was the point?) There's also the issue of ADC (Apple Display Connector) video card selection; i.e., with an ADC monitor like the 17" ASD, you may wind up stuck with the stock GeForce MX card (or optional Radeon?) unless you want to buy a separate VGA monitor. Nvidia, for example, has already said they have NO plans to allow retail versions of the ADC cards they are providing to Apple. This means that when Apple comes out with a new round of computers that have something better than the GeForce MX, you may not be able to upgrade because of ADC. Right now, I can't upgrade my Rage Pro to a GeForce MX and I can only buy an ADC Radeon through Applestore. If I had bought a VGA monitor, I could choose between a retail Radeon, ProFormance 3, Voodoo5, Number Nine, etc. Given these quality and video card issues, I'm seriously considering buying a VGA monitor. Any recommendations for that?

I just got the studio display 15' LCD with a new g4 and i must say it is pretty impressive. I have owned an old powerbook with an active matrix LCD, which I found the display to be tiring on the eye, and sometimes not bright enough, i was pretty skeptical about the image qualities of a LCD display. However, with the recent price cut, and the Apple Studio display 17" CRT being TOO expensive (you could get a sony g400 19" for that money), I decided to go with the LCD. The image quality is excellent, it's extremely bright, and looks uber-cool. Regarding dead pixels, when I first connected it to the computer I saw one black pixel which i found to be slightly annoying, but by some chance I rubbed the dead pixel area and that pixel was working again! I have no dead pixel at the moment.

However, I would like to point out, that the pixel refresh rate is much slower than a CRT (as in you can see ghost trails when scrolling fast) but it isn't that much of a issue in my use of the computer.

I have a blue and white G3 with the blue and white studio display, and I will never buy anything but a flat panel again. They are marvelous to work on, clear and bright, my eyes never fatigue. This monitor is a little older, so there is a slight shift in the vertical viewing angle, but the new one is excellent. I am a graphic designer and produce web, print and video on this machine and find the colour to be very acurate.
