I might like to get a couple of these drives mainly for data. The question I have is can they be used for anything else such as movies or whatever???????

I own one of the rare standalone DVD players in existence that support DVD-RAM. Beyond mine and a handful of others, essentially no other standalone players support DVD-RAM.

If you want to make movies that can be played on a normal DVD player get DVD-R(W) or consider DVD+RW. Note that neither are 100% compatible though.
