Well, I can't give advice on that burner on particular, so this isn't much use, but half an answer is better than no answer, right?
Well, sometimes...
I have the Yamaha 8424SX, and it has been brilliant - never had any probs with it.
I have used other burners, and often they are plagued with problems, and burning with them is a hit and miss affair...
Yamaha is the best name in the burning business - they've been there the longest, and I have experience with 3 of their burners. Each one was awesome.
The 8824 is, obviously, an 8 X rewriter - this doesn't cause any problems, but be aware, that to burn a re-writable disc at 8X, you will need special RW media. Most RW media is 4X rewrite only.
Of course, that simply means you have to write RW discs at 4X - no major prob (I think).
8X write is plenty - I rarely use it as it is.
There are some burners on the market that offer 12X writing - thats just going along with the bigger numbers is better game.
As the write speed increases, you need faster data thoroughput, and there is more chance of something going wrong.
Also, the slower something is burner, the more accurate it is. Not that that matters too much.
So thats basically covered - Yamaha - good. 8X rw - good. 8X write - good. I think the 8824 also supports 24X audio ripping - or is that 16X? Oh well, either way its plenty fast.
The only thing with it I can't really comment on is FireWire.
Personally, if I had the choice of going with firewire or SCSI, I'd take SCSI.
However, from what I hear, FireWire is good enough.
Its plenty fast enough for a burner, if that is a concern. Don't let it be...
However, I have heard of problems with FireWire burners. Mostly limited to the Que drives. I have never heard of a problem with this particular model (then again, it hasn't been out real long...)
If possible, get the external SCSI model. It will cost extra though - and you'll need to get a SCSI card. That is assuming you are on a mahine that has SCSI or can take a SCSI card.
So basically expect it to be a damn good burner, and if its a good as mine, you'll be as happy with it as is possible
Hope that helped somewhat...

I've heard nothing but good things about Yamaha drives as well. I've been waiting for this drive to be available somewhere (anywhere) but my favorite online store, Outpost, still marks it as Pre-Order. I guess I could wait, but my 2x4 (that's right, no rewrite) scsi burner is starting to show its age after 3.5 years.

Where did you find this drive in stock? Seems to be on 'Pre-Order' most places I look.

I just bought one of the new Yamaha firewire cd-rw drives (8X8X24) on ebay for $239. The guy I dealt with has been extremely professional, He had 50 drives and only 14 were sold today. His email is fccs@fccsonline.com. You might want to try contacting him!
