I am looking for a good, entry level (sub-$500) mini-dv camcorder. The models I have been looking at online, after narrowing down the field, are the Panasonic PV-GS300, the Canon ZR700 the Canon Elura 100 and the Sony DCR-HC96. It bothers me that apparently only the DCR-HC96 has a mic-in port. On the other hand, the DCR-HC96 is only a 1-CCD unit, and I have been conditioned to discriminate if it doesn't have 3-CCDs. Any alternate suggestions or other opinions?

No replies yet, so I am replying to myself. I just found the Canon ZR800 ($217 at Rite Buys). Rated pretty highly and has a mic-in port. I wish I could justify an XL-1, but for now I think I found my camcorder.

Have you checked out the reviews on these sites?

As an aside, I like to buy items like this at Costco. They may not have the very cheapest price (although it's always quite competitive), but their total satisfaction return policy means you can buy, try it out and if you arent completely satisfied return it for a full refund (it doesnt have to be defective)---and then try out another that you think you'd like better.
