I want to upgrade my 1.67 pb to a larger hard-drive (80gb, 5400 right now).
My questions are:
1. Can anyone talk about the real-world speed improvements of going to 7200?
2. I'd love a 160gb 7200, but there aren't any. Are these around the corner (3-6 months) or should I just compromise?
3. Should I wait for flash / hard drive composites? Are they going to be compatible with my machine?
Thanks!

1. Not strictly applicable, but Barefeats has some comparisons of the 5400 and 7200RPM drives. Basically, depends on what you do.
2. 160GB 7200RPM 2.5" drives have been recently announced, so they should definitely be shipping soon. Unfortunately, they only have SATA versions, which won't work in your PowerBook. I wouldn't hold my breath on that changing: 200GB laptop SATA drives have been out for 8+ months and no ATA100 versions yet.
3. Flash-based drives, if and when they come out on the general market, will be expensive, and have smaller capacity than your 80GB drive for at least the next 12 months. Not worth waiting for, IMO. Composite drives are more promising, but the hardware isn't even there at the OEM level yet, so again, you'll likely be waiting quite a while.
I'd suggest just getting a 160GB 5400RPM drive and calling it good. Prices are very reasonable, and the technology is tried and true. If ultimate performance is what you're after, an external FW800 drive is your best option.

Hey thanks! I think that's what I'll do. The external might be the route for some less used stuff, but I need to be pretty mobile, and don't like lugging external drives. Thanks for the advice!

P.S. Buy a Seagate drive - better warranty (five years) compared to Toshiba, Western Digital, Fujitsu, Maxtor, etc. Avoid Hitachi like the plague.

Hi there,
shifuimam is right - Seagate is the way to go; a CanCom techie fitted a 120 Gb 5400 into my 15" G4 PB a couple of months ago - a great piece of kit, a great price with a great warranty - and it is extremely quiet!
