i think a new ipod will come out, just because i have one now...they always seem to do that to me bought an imac in november...i should learn to wait i guess. i have over 1000 songs on my ipod (importing at 128kbps) so unless you have tons of music just buy one now...you know you want to

Buy one now; I just did. Otherwise you'll end up waiting for an update that might not happen, and just as soon as you give in and buy one anyway, Apple will announce a new one.
The original iPod will also hold its value well second hand.

Tempting innit?
I also really want one, but first generation Apple goods always scare me off purchasing.
I think that an updated iPod will be announced in Tokyo. Hopefully with a more scratch resistant shell and a line level audio out jack. Audio in would be great too....though unlikely.
I hope.
Otherwise, I will probably get one around then (end of March). The resale value should stay pretty high

I wouldn't hold onto too much hope that the iPod's resale value will stay too high - if Apple knows what they're doing, the update will double the capacity of the iPod (as that's pretty much the only possible option, given Toshiba's drives) as well as add new features. Suddenly the original iPod's gonna seem pretty crappy...

Doubtful in my mind that it will be updated, it is still not available in some International Markets.
Here in Australia it will be released some time in Feburary. Think about it, just because it was released in the US first 3 months ago does not make for an outdated player, for the rest of the world it may only be a month old.
Apple won't release an new model when it hasn't even tapped the potential market of the rest of the world.
Sorry America the is another world out other than your own.
For those who are going to wait for a new model WAIT !! I'll enjoy my i-pod that i bought while in the States last year. the same model that iI feel will be around for a while yet.

It's very doubtful that a new iPod will be announced. Apple is selling all they can make, and they announced yesterday that there would be no new hardware announce for the next few months.

Read that press release again. They mentioned all hardware BUT the iPod.

The hard drive that is used in the iPod (toshiba 1.8") was only available in 5 GB version when apple announced the original iPod. A few months ago toshiba introduced new 10 GB and 20 GB versions for only slightly more... it would not surprise me to see apple either completely replace the HD with a 10 GB HD or introduce a 10 GB model for $50-100 more in the upcoming month or two. if we're lucky we might even see a 20 GB model, but I doubt that, as it would require modification to the iPod's form factor (the 20 GB HD is slightly larger than the other two). I hope so at least... I'm going to be in the States for about 2 weeks in 2 months and I want to pick up a high-capacity iPod!

Just ordered my iPod. With the Ed discount, taxes, and 2 day shipping it was just under $400. I read all the responses to this thread and made the decision that I couldn't wait a month to start enjoying this product in return for possible additional features that may not be of significant importance to me. If they are, I suppose I could try selling it on ebay, but then I would have to sell it for half of what it cost me. No I think I'll just enjoy it for 2-3 years, the average life of my electronic equipment.
Now I can finally work out to the kind of music I like (trance, freestyle) rather than that junk they play at my school gym (hip hop mostly, how can you work out to that?). Then there is also a coolness factor to this iPod which should score me some points with the ladies:
Girl: "What are you listening to Mike?"
Me: "Trance on my new MP3 player"
Girl: "Wow! It's so pretty! Can I try it?"
Me: "Ahh...well it's very delicate equipment"
Girl: "I know how to handle those..."
You get the picture. Who knows were these conversations will end up?!
Another reason why you should get your iPod now: Spring Break! That's right, it's only a few weeks away, I've got to be ready for my overdue vacation.

Are you serious... If they had a 100GB iPod, I still wouldn't be able to fill it. 5GB - MP3's@128kb/s, you can fit something like 80 hours of music... I'm a big music freak, and still can't fill my iPod
If you really need an extra firewire drive, I might wait and see if something gives, or wait for the first price drop. One way or another you will have a great piece of hardware...

Dear Apple,
Please bring out a more scratch-resistant 10gig iPod at Macworld Tokyo. I will be your friend for a very long time if you do.
Lots of Love,

New Apple ad campaign:
"Presenting the all new iPod -- Your electronic pick up device. Get it. Get some."
Beats getting on the Lakers bus anyday, even if Shaq does say so. And might even win you a Grammy. (Very subtle references to where the iPod's been seen lately.)
Hope it goes great for you, Sosa!

MWNY is not until July. MW Tokyo is the end of next month. I'm going to stop speculating on what's coming out in the future. Apple is very tight lipped about new product release, and all this speculation is pointless. You'll never own the latest product, so you can either wait forever to own nothing, or buy, and enjoy what you have.

Well I got my iPod a few days ago and have almost my entire CD library in it, still have 2.4 Gigs of space left. I think I will still have 500 megs left when I finish importing my CDs. I currently have 508 songs. So now if Apple does bring out a bigger hard drive I won't feel bad about it, I don't have enough music to fill my current 5 gigs. I'm importing music now that I don't really care for myself just so other people who may borrow my iPod can experience some variety.
My only regret? I received an electronic coupon from Apple today for $25 off any purchase of $269 or more. Darn!
I've heard that it is possible to play Break-out in your iPod. Anyone know if this is true? Where can I download the game?

I really think making the iPod more scratch resistant should be the top priority for Apple right now. That is currently the only thing keeping me from it, because I hold out hope that they will fix this in the near future. My MiniDisc player has a matte aluminum shell and still looks great after 3 years of heavy use. However, I don't think I would be able to say the same about the iPod's mirrored back after the same treatment. All they need to do is make it matte silver and I would be a happy iPod owner! I can only hope!
