I'm curious if anyone else has had trouble with Microsofts Intellimouse Explorer.

A month or two ago my mouse suddenly started having trouble staying powered up (the light would frequently die) if it was plugged into the keyboard. I didn't think too much of that, since the mouse would work perfectly if plugged into a powered usb source (powered hub, tower itself), and I knew others with the same problem.

Then, suddenly yesterday, the mouse simply died. I tried plugging it in different places, even on a friends PC, all with the same results: it blinks once when you plug it in, then goes dead. I have no clue what's causing it, but since it's less than a year old, I'm hoping Microsoft will replace it.

Anyone had this happen to them? I'd heard rumors of Microsoft mouses being known for crappy buttons, but this ones new to me...

A few months ago, mine did the same thing. I eventually traced the problem to a loose connection where the wire joins the body of the mouse.

You might try wiggling the wire to see if you can get a sporadic light or not. If so, it's probably the same problem.

I've had a similar problem. I haven't noticed a change in the mouse illumination, but it definately stops responding.

This event is contemporaneous with the installation of the last game sprockets update (1.75?).
It occurs under OS9 and OSX.

The mouse works fine if I unplug and replug it.

My intellimouse explorer died a few months back with the same symptoms described here and Microsoft replaced it under warranty relatively quick. From what I gathered there have been a number of intellimice with this problem.

I have experienced the same problem. I had been using the mouse for about 6 months and all of a sudden the light went dead, it stopped responding and the cursor on the screen would freeze but I could still tab around the page. Unplugging and then plugging it back in to either the keyboard or the tower wouldn't work. But as soon as I plugged my hockey puck in, the mouse worked and the cursor moved. FYI, I use USB Overdrive and not the Microsoft drivers. I ended up having to call Microsoft Tech Support and get them to replace my mouse. Unfortunately, they were out of stock and I was told not to expect the replacement for about a month. I am expecting it any day now.

I've had the same kind of problem with 3 of the 7 IE mice we bought. Just call 1 800 933 4750 and let them know. I was able to get free replacements just by giving them the PIN number from the bottom of the mouse.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up calling Microsoft and they're shipping out a replacement, but I was told to expect a 4-6 week shipping time. Considering how heavily I've come to rely on those extra buttons, I may have to go out and replace it for myself anyway.

Anyone know of a good (aka, non-Microsoft) 5 button optical mouse?

For customers living in the US that are having problems with their intellimouse call 1-800-360-7561. Right now they're on a 2-4 week back order.
