Simply put, my Microsoft Intellimouse if crapping out on me.

I have used USB Overdrive for a long time and I have favored them highly over MS's supplied drivers.

However, lately, I noticed that the speed of which my Intellimouse tracked the pointer on the screen varied from program to program. Ironically, IE5 made it go the slowest! So I temporarly switched to Netscape 4.7, it was fine. Then it acted up again, just no where near as bad as with IE5.

So I blame the USB Overdrive drivers because they affect my Logitech mouse also.

I then procede to install the MS drivers and Ṿila! Everything is back to normal, but then the mouse begins to turn off randomly! Yea, the red LED inside turns off and it shuts down. So then to power it back up, I have to unplug it the replug it.

What's at fault here? Is the Intellimouse dead? Is my mobo fried? Is my system messed up? Please help!

Perhaps you are overloading the power requirements for the USB. Do you have it plugged directly into your computer? Or are you chaining devices? Or plugging into a USB hub?

I'd look into removing any additional USB devices before coming to the conclusion the mouse has gone bad. Although I've heard this particular model (I've got the same one - with a wheel) had some problems failing. I've never had a problem with mine aside from the poor drivers from MS. The USB Overdrive fixed my gripes and performs flawlessly.

It's plugged right into the machine.

I went from USB Overdrive to MS Drivers back to USB Overdrive and finally to MS Drivers. All of them had their own irritating quirks.

As you can imagine I am PO'ed.

I think I have to paraphrase Jar Jar Binks here "Meesa Stupid Assa!"

It turns out that USB Overdrive has a preferences file, which I forgot about. And they were corupt as hell. So I dumped those, restarted, reentered my serial number, and TA DA!

Back to normal now.
