I purchased a used 17-inch 1.67 GHz powerbook a few weeks ago. Now, the keyboard and trackpad have suddenly topped working. I don't have the Apple Hardware Disk. Any suggestions other than repair? Thank you.

Has the laptop ever been taken apart? Sometimes the connections for the trackpad and keyboard can be very difficulty to get seated correctly.

is it only on the os?
try booting off some cd or holding alt at startup, to see if the mouse will work then. if so, perhaps some system files are damaged.

I fixed the problem by logging out, then logging in as a different user, then logging in again. Simply logging in and out didn't work. How hard is it to take one apart? I took apart my 800 many times..... It was shorting out, and I tried to re-insulate it. But I would not like to have taken apart the front case.

Isn't there any kind of options for turning off your trackpad and keyboard? Might have turned them off or something on one user

If logging out and logging in as a different user fixed it, I seriously doubt this is a hardware issue. Possibly a corrupted system preference or a badly behaved background app. Have you tried doing a 'safe' startup?
If you really want to dismantle your machine, it's not that difficult. Have a look at the guide.

it stopped working again after entering sleep mode and reawakening. My guess is that the two connectors are loose on the logic board, but I don't know. These things (PB Alumninum) are hell to take apart, so it looks like I need to have it repaired. The keyboard lights and mouse are dead, and they do not show up under the USB connections on the Apple System Profiler. (They did before; I'm pretty sure...).

The previous owner installed more RAM and a new hard drive. Could that affect it? I've seen the keyboard and trackpad work again for short periods of time. But they don't show up under System Profiler... Amazingly, it just started working again while I am writing this. But it may not be working ten minutes from now....

Replacing the HD could certainly have resulted in either frying some small circuit or leaving the keyboard cable loose. But I just don't understand why certain software behavior should trigger and or alleviate it. If it is truly intermittent, then a hardware issue makes plenty of sense.
Before resorting to the $ for repair, maybe you can clone your system to an external drive, and try formatting and reinstalling? Not a great answer, but it should pretty definitively rule out software causes.
