As some of you might or might not know, I'll be staying in Berkeley for four months soon and I plan on getting a new camera (my old one died on me and I had to sell it on ebay). I'm using slrs for more than 10 years now. I had to use a point-'n'-click for a few months in Japan -- and I hated it. A toy, I need a `real' camera

In terms of companies, I'm quite open: I'd prefer a Nikon (I like the way they feel) or Olympus (e. g. a used E-1). The only brand I want to exclude for now is Sigma: Both, the SD-9 and SD-10 (which I've held in my hands) have had a horrible viewfinder: the covered area was greyed out and all the reviewers complained that they composed the image including the masked area. The SD-14 is new and way too expensive. I'm not so fond of Canon's UI, although I would consider a used 10D or so. A large viewfinder is a big plus since I wear glasses.

So, I thought I'd buy a new one once I get my tax refund. My budget is kinda low (600-700 €, perhaps 800, but that'd be pushing it and eat away from my travel budget), so I thought of getting a used dslr. How's the US market for used cameras? Where do you buy used cameras for `good' prices? Local stores? Craigslist? What models are good deals?
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

New Nikon D40 w/kit lens can be had for <$600 from reputable vendors. Good sensor, nice ergonomics. Only disadvantage is older AF Nikon lenses won't work with it and no bracketing. While not always the cheapest, I find B&H to be very reliable, and have often decent prices. Their used stuff can be a bit pricey, but has a 90-day guarantee.

How big is the viewfinder (e. g. compared to the D70)?
(You need to know my E-20 had a huge viewfinder and I got spoiled; before that, I had an F80 which also had a nice viewfinder.) Plus the camera is too small.

I found the viewfinder comparable to my D70. The D80's seemed somewhat better to me. I would certainly recommend finding a store to try out at least the current generation. Tech specs don't really tell you how a camera will feel in the hand...

(You may want to post this question on the dpreview forum as well.)
