Really high res? How high? What for? Flatbed is definitely better for quality, top feed better for ease of use!

I'd think of getting a laser all-in-one that can also copy and scan to pdf. This will literally save you hours and get a regular flatbed scanner for your other duties.
If you scan anything that's been printed (e. g. photos), pretty much any scanner you can get these days will suffice (photos are printed with 300 dpi, a resolution that's mastered by most scanners). Getting a more expensive scanner is only worth it if you scan (1) negatives/positives or (2) hand-printed photos.

Then I'd say go for a fancier multifunction copier. (There are stand-alone scanners that send their scans without a computer via e-mail, but these puppies are fairly expensive.)
We got a Kyocera FS-1118 MFP in our office, works, great. It sends pdf files of the scans via e-mail as attachments. I've copies of most of my (hand-written) calculations on my computer! You can also scan comments easily and forward them to your co-workers. All with the touch of a button. No need for retouching or anything. Plus you can still scan in color at acceptable quality (the scanner's quality is that of a $100 scanner you can get in any computer shop).
Don't even bother getting a scanner and doing it manually!
So what's your budget?

i have been recently told to get an epson scanner. seems to be really good. also, to avoid the all in ones. alone a printer and scanner are great, but together, (esp. for high res stuff you mentioned) they're not so hot.

If you don't need color so often and are interested in scanning multiple pages, mfps are the way to go. With a flatbed scanner, it took me about 30 minutes to scan 10-12 pages and decrease their size so that you can publish it online or send by mail. This takes about a minute now.
For bw printouts, 300-400 dpi is plenty.
