We got some of the new Apple/Diamondtron Studio Displays (five of them from the rear look like a fleet of space shuttles lining up...) and with each one we got this plastic lollipop-looking device - Apple PN 600-1997-B - nowhere to be found in the TIL and unless we missed something, no instructions with it. It's 6" long with a grey 1" disk at one end with a 3/16" hole in the disk. Calibration tool? Eye patch for eye test cheaters? Pacifier for Wintel folks who can't use the ADC connector?
Thanks in advance...

It's for calibrating your display.
Check either the supplied set-up manual or dialogue for monitor calibration (color,
methinks).
Good Luck!

Just went thru a sealed ASD docs package - this is the new ASD with the all-in-one connector - and there's no manual other than one that says plug it in - and the warranty folder is in japanese. Nothing about the calibration tool / lollipop.

That device is indeed a calibration tool. none came with my older 17" Graphite Apple Studio Display (so I don't think you're missing anything there, Ciph). I do have one from the AppleVision 1701 I had with my old Performa (bless it's heart).
I do not have easy access to that monitor's manual (box in attic) but as I recall, there was some procedure where you controlled the darkness of a grey field which you held the popsicle stuck up to and made the color match. The calibration software which came with the oGASD 17" has an equivalent test involving making one set of grey bands (on screen) match up with another set of grey bands (also on screen). this calibration does not employ any magic wands.
jpellino, you should definitely go through all steps of the calibration process for your monitor (and perform them under as standard as possible light conditions for optimal results). if you are at some point supposed to use the wand, the software will tell you when and how. If it is not used, then dont' worry about it.

I *WILL* use it - I couldn't believe what a difference using ColorSync and calibrating my PB 1400c made. Doubt the students will notice, but hey...
