Ok, I've decided to wait on ordering a PowerMac, but do some little upgrades to my iBook instead. First thing I'm gonna get is a Firewire CDRW. I've narrowed it down to two choices, but I just can't decide between them. They are the QPS QUE! 24x and the EZQuest BOA 24x. One question I have is can either of these stand vertically? I don't have a lot of room on my desk, so one that could stand up would definitely seal the deal. However if neither of them (or both of them) can do this, which one is the most reliable? Anyone have either of these care to comment??? Thanks.

I've been very happy with the QPS 24x. I've only made one coaster and I think it was more my fault than the burners.
It's not small, tho'. Big, bulky thing that can only stand horizontally (the sides are curved). Matches a G4 tower pretty well, tho'.

I have an earlier EZQuest firewire CD-RW, 12x10x32. I've been using it with Toast for more than a year, and have nothing but praise. Simple, reliable, dependable. It is large, however, 10.75"x8.5"x2.75", and cannot be set vertically.

I must vote for the Lite-On CDRW's. They are a great value and are hard to beat. I have read/been told they are Apple OEM. Thye ae fully suported and are great all around.
I suggest that you read the Drive Compatability Database at xlr8yourmac.com.
You can get a Lite-On 16X Firewire CDRW for $139. See today's mention on DealMac for more drives and direct links.

vertically? wtf? it would have to be a slot loading drive. Does anyone even make slot-loading burners? I've never seen one. Is that what the combo drives in the newest Ti books have? If so, are they the only ones in existence?

Why would it have to be slot loading???? My PS2 stand's vertically, and it's not slot loading. Actually, most CDROM drives can be turned vertically, but many CDRW's cannot. Something to do with the lasers...

sorry, it's just that all the cd burners I've seen have a tray, and if it's on it's side, the disc would just fall out on the floor. but I guess it could be like my pismo, where the disc snaps into the tray. Or my dad had an old cd-rom drive that's top just opened like a nintendo...never mind me

If you notice on almost all cdrom trays, there are four stoppers (wtf are they called?) that will keep a cd in the tray. All you need is two of them on one side to keep a cd from falling out.

I ended up going with the QPS as well. It's much bigger than I thought it would be, but man is it fast. Burns faster than my TDK 24x did on my old athlon.
