I'm assuming (and hoping) the answer is yes, but I was curious about whether the iPod will work with the orignal B&W G3 (I've got a 350MHz B&W). I haven't actually used any FireWire peripherals since I got the computer and I've read that people have experienced problems with FireWire on them. I guess there were problems with it, as it was the first Mac with it built in.

Wondered if anyone with one of these had bought an iPod. Don't want to spend $400, get the gorgeous thing in my possession, then have to return it because it works buggy with my G3.

Thanks.

Should work fine with any factory-firewire Mac. You've got one, so it should work just fine! In fact it works with PCI card FireWire too (at least in some cases).

The early B&W G3's have FireWire ports that work at 200mbps rather than 400. Half speed obviously. This would cause problems with some high bandwidth peripherals. But I should think your G3 will have no problems at all communicating with an iPod. Just make sure your FireWire extentions are all up to date.

Mac Clone Owners Report iPod Working with OS 9.1 in Legacy Macs: -
" I received my iPod today. I have a clone running OS 9.1. The specifications for the iPod itself require OS 9.2.1 or OS X 10.1 none of which are supported on my machine. iTunes 2 however runs on OS 9.1 so I was hopeful that the iPod would work anyway. Fortunately it works flawlessly in OS 9.1.

[I asked for details on his mac model and Firewire card and he wrote]
The computer is a Power Tower Pro 250 upgraded with a MaxPower G4 400MHz. The firewire card is an evergreen firewire/USB combo hooked up so draws it's power from the power supply and not the PCI bus. "

Another reader with a older Mac clone also noted an iPod working:

" Just thought I would let you know that I was able to get the iPod to work with 9.1(in fact, now that I think about it, I think its 9.04) on a PowerComputing PTP. However I was unable to get it to work with OS X. I have 10.1 5G27 installed, so I am hoping when I go to the actual shipping version it will fix it. Under X, iTunes does open up when the iPod is plugged in, but iTunes never shows the iPod in the source table.

Could someone please elaborate on "at least in some cases"? I've seen many posts about getting the iPod to work with PowerBooks with FireWire PC cards, but not specifically stating that it will work with a PCI FireWire card (assuming it's powered FireWire) in my Beige G3. And by "works" I mean full support for advertised features... none of this reseting of the iPod to put it in Forced FireWire Mode (or whatever) nonsense!

Thanks,
Joe
