I just got mine and Apples directions didn't mention anything about a intial 1 or 3 hour charge to prep the battery. What's the deal with this? Can i just use it? Will it mess with the batteru life?

That's the first I've heard of this... mine came mostly charged right out of the box. I didn't see any "pre-charge" warning either. Where'd you hear this?

I read (I think it was on the iPod FAQ on Apple's site) that one hour gets you 80% and three hours gives you a full charge.

My wife claimed hers came fully charged from the factory. Mine was fully
un-charged. Since I was busy transferring my entire MP3 library to the
little device and busy copying CDs into the machine for about two hours
it was plenty of time to get a decent charge going. I then left it
connected to the machine overnight after spending an afternoon taking
a walk with my wife (also with her own iPod). Got some funny looks in
a restaurant earlier in the day when we took them out.
