The strangest problem trying to print to my Epson 740 tonight.

The document is a series of color images from the MS Word clip art resource.

First, if I print in the economy mode, I get only black and white images. Color will show up only with the highest quality setting.

Second, four times in a row the computer crashed as soon as the spooling to the printer had been completed. That happened in high, middle, and economy quality. After I rebooted, a message came up every time that I had a document still to print--and then the printing went on without problem.

Finally I tested the printer with a plain old Word text document. I had the same problem--crashing as soon as the spooling took place. But then, after the last crash, I could print without the computer crashing. Again, I tried with all three quality levels, and the problem seems to have disappeared.

I'm running OS 9.04, by the way, the SC 740 extension is version 5.57E, and the Epson Monitor 3 is version 1.26E.

I had the Epson USB extensions turned on, but I disabled them for the last printing job, when the crashing did not take place. However, I had not restarted the computer after I disabled them.

Is the disabling of the USB extensions what did the trick even though I hadn't rebooted? I'm really puzzled by all this, and I really want to have the ability to print color images in the economy mode!!

Thanks for any suggestion!

The Epson USB Print Class files are only necessary if you have an iMac with Mac OS 8.1. They cause problems with anything else. (Actually, they seem to cause problems even with iMacs running Mac OS 8.1.)
