Almost any internal CDRW will work in a Mac. You just have to make sure you have a SCSI controller if you buy a SCSI CDRW or an IDE controller for an IDE/ATAPI CDRW. All macs for the last couple of years have used IDE for their HD bus, but not all of them have SCSI.

The biggest problem you'll probably come across is finding an internal CDRW that includes Toast or Discribe. Most that I've seen only come with Windows software, in which case you gotta spend another $80 for Toast Deluxe.

I think Yamaha has a couple CDRW's that come with Mac S/W.

This is mostly a re-post from 4-20-2k.
"Last night I *solved* the problem of my QUE! 4/4/24 not mounting to the desk top. After going to the Mitsumi (who make the actual drive) home page, I learned the drive is actually a ATAPI Enhanced IDE Interface unit, that QUE! fashioned a Firewire interface for. The B/W G3 already uses this interface for the internal DVD drive and has an "extra" IDE and power connector in place. I popped the CD-RW out of it's plastic case, and with a "nip and a tuck" to the G3, it slid right in under the DVD! I changed the jumper on the back of the CD-RW from Master to Slave, and it booted right up! Since the motherboard is set up for only one audio input I still cannot listen to audio from the CD-RW, but a simple switch between the DVD and CD-RW will solve that as well. I get a "wrong driver" message when I launch Toast, but that doesn't seem to be a problem."
I purchased Toast Deluxe anyway because I am wanting to transcribe some of my old vinyl to CD. If I was to do it again, I might just buy the bare drive, although it probably wouldn't come with the matching translucent frost front bezel. I do now have a cool looking case with a firewire interface that could be used for external storage.

I just received my Xcarat Expansion Bay CD-RW from MCE (www.powerbook1.com) and it is AwEsOmE! I'm using it in a Wallstreet 292MHz Powerbook running OS 9.0.4
One caveate: it does not (yet) support Retrospect for backing up. It comes bundled with Toast 4 for $449 and is available for Wallstreet, Lombard, and Pismo.
