For the past few hours I've tried to get my iPod to sync to my iMac DV SE 400. I've tried to no avail to get it to mount on the desktop or iTunes 2 in X.1 and 9.2.1
Nothing works, I reset the PRAM, reinstalled iTunes, reset open firmware, tried forced FireWire mode. Nothing absolutely nothing works. I called Apple and they offer virtually no tech support for the iPod and I'd have to get a service plan just to TALK with somebody to figure out what's wrong. The iPod charges from the port, and other devices work fine.... I just don't get it.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

NOTE: All over the Apple Discussion forums, and 1 case at MacFixIt Powerbook users have fried their FireWire ports ever since they used their iPods. Mine works though... Looks like I'm an isolated case.

Does it have anything to do with Powered vs. Un-Powered firewire port? I read somewhere that the ipod only works on powered firewire ports even though it is self-powered. Maybe your iMac does not have a powered firewire port?

iMacs ports are powered. Cards that go in type 2 slots in PBs aren't, and that's not me...

What is showing on the iPod screen?

The battery charging icon?
The firewire icon indicating data transfer is happening?
The word "iPod"?

I'm a bit curious as to what's showing on the screen.

Is your iTunes 2 on OS X or OS 9.2?

What does iTunes 2 say? Does it show 'So and so's ipod" in the playlists?
Or isn't it showing up in the playlist?

Do you have any other firewire devices? Have you tried disconnecting
them in a troubleshooting step?
