Well, I was looking forward to enjoying my new iPod and it arrived today - dead!
I went through the knowledge base info, the help info, and called tech support - who deemed it a DOA. (It does not turn on, it does not charge, no display icons..). It gets better, the tech guy says I have to call Apple Store to arrange return. I do that. I wait on hold for 30 minutes. I talk to Apple Store guy and he wants a Case Number....guess what tech support forgot to provide me with??? Yes, I have no case number! Back to square one again. Here I sit typing away while I wait to talk to tech support again to get my case number. (Without this number that I should have been provided with on my initial call - I will be charged a "restocking fee" to restock this dead iPod so it can be shipped to one of you in the future..)
I'm on the brink of just returning this thing and walking away from it - regardless of how good it looks.
Is Apple support always this flaky?
What a drag..

Umm, do you always bitch before you troubleshoot?
Have you done a search here to see that a bunch of other people's have arrived in what SEEMS to be a DOA state, when all you really need to do is hold down two buttons to get it to reset (seems to hang from low voltage state of shipping or something...)
Try that FIRST...geez..

A friend and I got our iPods yesterday and his was DOA. The reset wouldn't even do anything. He fixed it by popping the case off and reconnecting the battery. Guess it had worked itself loose. If you don't feel comfortable doing that (it probably voids the warranty) then you'll have to wait for your replacement.
Just a thought.

Heh, dude, this device cost a fair chunk of cash, and to have it arrive DOA is not something you look forward to. The fact that they are charging him a restocking fee is even worse..cut him some slack.

<A restocking fee??>

Really?? I've had keyboards die before and Apple overnighted a new ones and paid for the shipping back via Airborne complete with pickup. I don't think you'll be charged a dime.
So here's the truth:
(Without this number that I should have been provided with on my initial call - I will be charged a "restocking fee" to restock this dead iPod so it can be shipped to one of you in the future..)
Looks to me like the only way you pay a restocking fee is if you turn the thing in with no proof of anything. Heck it seems like you could have dropped it and they'ld only charge a restocking fee if you went and were told by Apple they don't cover items run over by trucks. Not a bad deal.
Again, all you have to do is call and they'll handle this the way they always do. With no hassles. If you really talked with them they should have your case on file and could give it to you if you call back.

I went through significantly more effort than you did prior to posting. I went through troubleshooting via iPod Help (in iTunes2), the knowledge base, the discussion groups, even tried the "step by step troubleshooting" link on the iPod support page (it lead to a dead link).
All you did was assume that no troubleshooting took place - on what basis?

The iPod support website has a form for repairs. Use it. It costs nothing. My iPod just went dead (rattling on the inside when shook). Awaiting box to send it back to Apple...
Best regards,
Brad
