I recently found an internal PCI modem for sale for a really good price. I already have a modem in the modem slot of my B&W G3, but the PCI modem has many more features (voicemail, CallerID, etc.) that I would like to take advantage of.

My question is this... would this modem work in the G3 simply by plugging it into a free PCI slot, or would I need a modem script for it? I realize most Mac users do not purchase PCI modems, but there has to be some sort of solution out there to use the HUGE number of PCI modems that are available.

Thanks in advance!

Nope. A PCI "real" modem appears to the system as a serial port card that happens to have a modem on it, but it would need drivers to operate the serial port. A PCI Winmodem won't work either, because those are intimately tied into the Windows communications architecture (a Winmodem is more akin to a Geoport modem, in that most of the processing is done in the CPU rather than in the modem.)

either way it won't work

Not only do "most" Mac users not use PCI modems, NO Mac users do, because there is not one single PCI modem that is Mac compatible.

Also, I believe that the blue and white's modem supports Caller ID. Try Mac CallerID (http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=2504 )

Note also that many PCI modems advertise features (mainly voicemail) that they do not include software for, in fact, cheap PCI modems often include no software at all aside from the driver.

Thanks for the response.

I just checked out MacCallerID, and it does NOT support the internal modem of the B&W G3. Weird, considering that the PDF file that's installed on my hard drive says that the Apple internal modem DOES support CallerID (AT#CID=1). I tried it anyway, and it indeed does NOT work.

Oh well, I suppose I'll just make do with my current setup.
