What would it take to turn my flatbed scanner into a slider scanner? Is it as simple as adding a bright/diffused light behind the slide and scanning?

Yes, and no. Just because you can do it doesn't mean you'd get acceptable results. Even the best flatbeds with slide adapters yield mediocre results. They just can't capture enough information at flatbed resolutions.

You are correct, I did manage to 'hack' out some results but they were not great. I am using a Umax Astra 1220 that supposedly scans at 9600dpi, though I suspect that is interpolated.

By diffusing a slide projector bulb light source through paper behind the slide I managed to get a halfway decent scan, though very grainy it is useable.

Definately more work than a real slide scanner and the results yeilded a 75% usable image.
