64-bit PCI slots and 32-bit PCI cards?

Does anyone know if the 64-bit PCI slots
in the PowerMac are backwards-compatible
with 32-bit PCI cards?

I have an Adaptec AHA 2940UW2 card from my old
FreeBSD PC that I'd like to use in my new G4.

Also, any idea if the MacOS X 10.1 DVD player
works with external firewire DVD-ROM drives?
