I've been using Palms for ages. My old Treo 600 will be replaced with a new Treo 680 quite soon. Any other 680 users here? What's your experience? Does it play nice with 10.4.9? Is there a normal USB connection cable or is it the same AC Power + USB combined cable mess they used on the 600? What's the current Palm Desktop Software version? Will I have to update my 4.1 version?

And another question: Can the Treo's internal Bluetooth be used to sync with the Mac? Does this work right away with Palm's Hotsync or does this require some kind of additional Software like iSync or any third-party tools?

dude, you'll get your answer faster if you go to HowardForums or treocentral or any number of other websites focusing on mobile phones and/or treos.

You will need something called the 'Missing Sync' by Mark Space at www.markspace.com/
I have a Treo 650 and only by purchasing and installing the above app could I get the T650 to sync with my PB running 10.4.9.
In my case the supplied Palm Desktop Software only seemed to work as far as 10.4.3 - the problems began after I upgraded to 10.4.4 but the 'Missing Sync' came to my rescue!
I hope this helps ..
Good luck.

Interesting. I have been able to sync my Treo 600 to my MBP running 10.4.9 without any problems. However, all I need it to do is backup the Treo in case of theft/damage and install new apps every once in a while. I'm not an iCal or Address Book user so I don't really need to sync the Treo to any Mac apps.

Both my fiancé and I have 650s and I use Missing Sync but all she uses is iSync. We both use iCal and Address Book. There are a few benefits to Missing Sync, but not sure if the features are enough to make me buy it again. With the 650 there are seperate USB and power cables, but I have only used Bluetooth for syncing.

I own a Treo 650
No problems with MAC
For synchronizing I recommend the Missing Sync. Not only for sync, but for many more things you can do (For xample synching with itunes. it works excellent)
I always sync using bluetooth. No problem with pairing. MAC recognizes perfectly Treo and works perfectly with Treo.
The only thing I am also searching is to use the Treo as a modem with MAC.
I know it is possible, just looking to know how to do it.
Hope this helped you
Good luck !!

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I got my 680 this weekend and I installed Palm's software (version 4.2.2 btw, amazingly it's not yet available on the Treo website!). The Hotsync feature works fine over the USB cable (which Palm finally disentangled from the power cable! ) and I even got iSync to work with the Treo just fine. I don't really need fancy features, so I guess I'm perfectly ok without MissingSync.
There are a couple of nasty bugs though.
• Whenever I have sync'ed, ConduitManager crashes on closing. Hotsync crashes when you quit it. It's not really bad since the sync has already been successfully completed, but it's certainly not nice.
• Obviously Palm software installs several Conduits which are in conflict with each other (Address Book and Contacts, Memos and Memo, Datebook and Calendar, ToDo and Tasks) and you can't synchronize before you get rid of some of the Conduits. I have no idea how their standard install can allow installation of obviously incompatible conduits.
• Whenever I open Conduit Settings in HotSync Manager, I get two error panels: "Unexpected Error (1852402768)". I can click OK and they're gone, but again it's certainly not nice behavior.
So all in all the Treo is a nice device and it syncs OK with my MBP, but the software is in dire need for an overhaul. It feels as if it's never really been updated since the old OS 9 version.
What really bothers me a lot though is that I couldn't get it to sync over BT. Could somebody give me a step by step guide on how to sync over BT? What do I have to do on the Mac and on the Treo to get it to sync over BT?

Hi Simon,
If I may quote you....
"There are a couple of nasty bugs though.
Whenever I have sync'ed, ConduitManager crashes on closing.
• Whenever I open Conduit Settings in HotSync Manager, I get two error panels: "Unexpected Error (1852402768)". I can click OK and they're gone, but again it's certainly not nice behavior."
Your experience with the above 'bugs' are the very reasons I bought 'Missing Sync' ....
Then:
"I don't really need fancy features, so I guess I'm perfectly ok without MissingSync."
Missing Sync is not about 'fancy features' - it has them of course, (as Luis Huaylinos says, it can sync with iTunes) but the bottom line is that it just does the job its supposed to do; sadly the Palm software doesn't, therefore I agree with you when you say that it is 'in dire need for an overhaul.'
Sounds as though you need it!
best

I see what you're getting at, voicebox. Personally, I just don't like the idea of having to pay $40 to use a Treo with a Mac even if on the box it says it works with OS X 10.4.x. But it's true, that's rather a Palm issue than one of MissingSync.
Anyway, I think I managed to track down why i was having the Conduit conflict and the Conduit Settings error warnings as well as the crashes. Obviously the asinine Palm Software installer installs brute force into /Library/ApplicationSupport regardless of where the Palm stuff was previously located. In my case the previous Palm support folder was located in my user library: ~/Library/AaplicationSupport. Not only did the new Palm installer install the new versions at a different location, but it also didn't attempt to delete the old versions. So the errors and crashes I was getting were basically a result of a version conflict. Anyway, I trashed all the old Palm support stuff in my user library and everything seems to work more or less fine now.
I'm still trying to get BT syncing to work. Again, if anybody here has done this and can give me step by step guide I'd really appreciate it.

I sync my 650 via Bluetooth with my MBP ever couple of days. My fiancé syncs hers via bluetooth every couple of days to her G5. I think you are not doing something right.
I bought my first one used, so I didnt have any instructions, but I think I had to go to bluetooth on the phone and do the setup device. I already downloaded Palm desktop to my MBP and in the menus there was a setting to enable iSync. Once I went through all the set up processes on the phone ( in set up devices under bluetooth) I got it to work fairly easily.

I tried every possible combination. I found this guide that seems to work for everyone but me...
Sharp Tools: Treo 650 Bluetooth Sync with Mac OS X
When hotsyncing thru the phone: "UNABLE TO INITIATE HOTSYNC ACTION BECAUSE PORT IS IN USE BY ANOTHER APPLICATION"
That's my problem. Everything else seems to be ok, they read each other, etc......
WHen syncing thru the computer, I get the "Preparing to Syncronize" message, but it never goes anywhere. Just sits there.
I couldn't do anything with my G5, or my PB. Why the hell should this be any different?
Maybe I'll use the insurance on my phone and declare it broken, Might be worth $50...nice new case, battery....

Hi Headshot,
'When hotsyncing thru the phone: "UNABLE TO INITIATE HOTSYNC ACTION BECAUSE PORT IS IN USE BY ANOTHER APPLICATION ......"'
Same problem here - hence Missing Sync!
On the other hand, I am curious so I will certainly try your 'fix' to see if it will work with 10.4.9...
PS: I have just tried your fix Headshot - I downloaded the lastest version of the Palm Desktop software and installed it. I immediately got a warning dialogue telling me of Transport Monitor problems, here it is, in full!
'The application "Transport Monitor" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "h<Transport Monitor><Transport Monitor><HotsyncLib.PPC><__ct__16CTransportRelMacF P18OpaqueTransportRefUc>
I got the same problem when I tried to open "HotSync Manager." It could not be launched because of the following shared library error: "O<HotSyncManager><HotSync Manager><HotSyncLib.PPC><SetConfigureConduitCallBa ck>"
Also the installation of the software caused a Kernal Panic on restart!
You know Headshot, I really can't be bothered with all this headache making rubbish - I'll do an uninstall and keep using Missing Sync - software that really works.
So three rousing cheers for Mark Space ..!!

I finally got BT syncing to work between the Treo an my MBP.
On the Mac:
• in System Prefs > BT > Settings, make Mac discoverable
• in System Prefs > BT > Sharing, turn on BT-PDA-Sync (and select Type: RS-232, not Modem!)
• in System Prefs > BT > Devices > Set Up New Device and add Treo to list of paired devices (make sure your Treo's BT is on for this to work)
• in HotSync Manager > Setup > Connection Settings select "bluetooth-pda-sync-port" and in "Settings..." set it to use "Serial" and "As fast as possible"
On the Treo:
• Prefs > Connection > New...
--> Give the connection a name (like "BT")
--> Connect to: PC
--> Via: Bluetooth
--> Device: select your Mac from the list (make sure your Mac's BT is on for this to work)
• start HotSync and select the connection name you assigned above from the list below the HotSync button
• hit the HotSync button and watch it Sync
