I am literally 5 clicks away from buying the niftly little device and I was wondering how is the machine doing marketwise? Looking at the forums it seems many people have bought one, so I have good hopes. Should I go ahead and buy now?

why don't you go see what else you can spend $400+ on, and then decide if it's worth it? I would pay $200 for iPod. That's it. Doesn't even have an EQ. Only 5 gigs. If they had more, I'd go to $300.

FWIW, I have mine on order (still waiting!) at Outpost.com. I called them this AM since I was getting a little antsy. They are expecting their shipment on november 20. Of the 500 or so units that they are expecting, they have already sold about 130 of them. I have to admit that while this sounds like a small number, it is higher than I expected. I imagine that a lot of other people purchase directly from Apple in order to get theirs right away.

I originally ordered my iPod from Outpost - until I found out that they weren't getting them until the 20th - I cancelled immediately and placed a new order with MacConnection. I got it the next day.

Just something to consider.

I was in Northstar Computers in Toronto on Tuesday and they were out. I am still undecided but would probably have bought one if I had had one in my hands to play with.

So it's probably a good thing they were out... Need to save my spare pennies for that G5

I was wondering if you would rather buy it if is doing great or poor in the market

If it is a hit, we will see a lot of competing products out soon so then there is a reason to wait, if not the mp3 market it going to continue in current fashion - price being most important factor.

I don't think Apple is going to improve much the iPod in the next year (see how long it took with the AirPort) so if you are going to get it, you might as well get it now, no point waiting.

I have both the Nomad Jukebox and the iPod and the iPod is so much superior and more fun to use that there is no competition between those two in my mind.

Just get it dude, you will not be disappointed.

just ordered mine from Computer Discount Warehouse, www.CDW.com.
They shipped it overnight via Airborne Express for only $10......

I dunno why people order theirs directly from Apple....I mean i read post after post of people waiting a full month for theirs to arrive...several resellers have them IN STOCK.....PLUS, the biggest thing that perplexes me is WHY pay sales tax on the thing at the Apple Store when most resellers do not charge sales tax as most do not have a presence in most states?....never could figure that one out.....

maybe someone will enlighten me?

I ordered through Outpost.com because I have a credit card that allows me to get an instant 5% rebate on any Outpost purchase. I also went through a shopping portal that gives me an additional 3% rebate at Outpost.com. So I have to wait a little longer...for 8% off it's worth the extra time for me. Then my plan is to pricematch the developer price with my credit card and get the iPod total price down below $300. Isn't that worth the time??? A lilttle devious and convoluted, yes, but it works.

I generally don't bother to dignify annoying people like him with an answer but in this case...if you had done your market research, a harddrive that size (in capacity and dimension) just by itself is almost $400. MP3-all-in-one decoder chips are around $50+, and other components put together plus design and manufacturing cost...If you were to make one yourself, it'll probably run to $600 easy. Apple makes a profit on the iPod since its produced in mass quantities, but not a very high margin...With that said, can you say you've actually spent the time to make an MP3 player from off-the-shelf components? I doubt u have much of a clue 'bout the "real world" when it comes to hardware engineering...
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

I'm an ADC Select member and we can get the iPod for $319. So that's probably at or very near cost. Just to give you an idea of Apple's profit margin on these things.

gotta love the student discount! It's only 30 bucks less, but still...that's 30 bucks I don't need to spend. That's the only reason I order stuff through the apple site
