I got my iPod on Monday, and I've got two questions.

1. I don't think I've ever brought my iPod to a full charge -- does it *stop* charging when the battery fills up? Does the screen change to let you know?

2. I've got a Powerbook g4 and like most people with smallish hard drives, I don't want to keep 5 gigs of music on my computer; I'm going to keep music on my iPod, not my computer. I haven't put the thing down since I got it, but I'm sure I will eventually. What happens if, say, you fill an iPod up with music, unplug it, and walk away from it for a month (or however it takes for it's battery to run down when it isn't turned on)? My point is, it'd be very annoying to have to re-rip 5 gigs of music from my CDs. Is this something to worry about?

1) I don't know, I've left mine plugged in for a few hours until it got pretty hot and I decided it was a good idea to unplug it.

2) No, don't worry about it. Not an issue.

Along the same line of the charging issue, is it possible to tell the iPod or the Mac/iTunes to NOT charge over firewire so that my PowerBook batteries don't get wasted?

It gets warm while charging, but when it stops it cools down. I've experienced this first hand. ;] The little battery indicator stops moving when it's fully charged I believe.

Mine indicates "CHARGING" when charging and "CHARGED" when fully charged. It does not get very warm even with overnight charging.

I heard you can get a 90% charge in about an hour if you are in a hurry, which makes sense. (It should be a linear curve between time and % change since it's a voltage drop issue...)

Otherwise, since the iPod uses a harddrive, even without a battery, data will be held in the player until you erase it. The problem that comes with a harddrive storage is that it can't be good when you are jogging or something...yeah, it's got 32mb of RAM for skip-protection, and protable harddirves are made to last and handle motion, but not as intensive as jogging...take your Ti-Book/iBook out for a few jogs while its on and you'll regret it...just keep that in mind...
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...
