I have a brand new 8GB usb key. When I plug it in, my mac pro says that the disc is not readable by the computer. I have the option of initializing it. What does that mean, should I do it? My friend has the same key, and his popped up on the desktop right away with no initialization.

Your key might not be formatted when you got it. So when you plug it in to the Mac Pro, you first have to format it (initialize)

Otherwise the USB key has a corrupted file system and you have to reformat it.

Disk Utility > Select the USB key on the left hand side > click the "Erase" tab > click "Erase" button
