Is it possible to use the Apple TV via composite? By using an HDMI to DVI adapter (or cable), then using the Apple DVI to composite/s-video adapter?

No.

The Apple DVI to composite/s-video adapter is just a pin converter that tells the video card to output a different signal.

You could buy a true HDMI or component to composite or s-video converter, but they're not cheap.

The video quality would be pretty crappy. That's why it's not offered.

I think it really sucks that the Apple TV doesn't offer RGB out for Europe. The iTV is capable of doing SD and we have tons and tons of widescreen SD PAL TV sets in Europe with RGB SCART input. But, almost none with component.

I would've bought one if it had RGB scart. I won't be buying an HD set untill we get more than 1HD channel over here and when OLED or SED or FED or whatever TVs are cheap.

But IIRC SCART carries RGB. Isn't there a cheap way to do RGB <-> component video?

Yes, SCART can carry RGB, S-video and composite in one connector. There are tons of RGB to component converters out there, but they aren't cheap (+€100) but almost no component to RGB converters. If they exist they're very expensive.

The RGB signal isn't compatible with the Component signal so it's not just a matter of attaching the right cables.

SCART RGB is somewhat compatible with the standard PC VGA output but it needs videocards that can send a correct sync signal (mostly ATI cards) and you'll need to do some soldering.

I do have component inputs on my receiver and it's possible that it can down convert that signal to S-video but I don't really like that idea of doing that. S-video just isn't good enough.
