I'm pretty sure there aren't any sound cards Mac compatible, but is there any equivalent? I know sound cards take care of sound when playing games and such to free up your computer, and they deliver surround sound, so how does a Mac make up for that?

Depending on how new your mac is, it might have an optical out jack, which can output 5.1 for DVDs.

richard- Specifically, I'm talking about a Mac Pro.
Kenneth- Thanks a bunch, but the card is used in PCI slots, and there are none of those in a Mac Pro. Can it be used in a PCI Express slot?
slpd- I'm assuming a Mac Pro would be new enough. Would the optical out jack support 5.1 for anything else, or just DVD's?

Look into USB or firewire sound cards liket the Sonica Theatre or the Griffin Firewave.
If you're trying to get 5.1 surround sound out, the other option is the optical audio out.

Well, the software has to be outputing 5.1, so if you're in something like iTunes, the optical output on your MP will only output a stereo signal. However in an app like DVD player (and possibly a couple games), the jack will output full 5.1.
If you're looking for something to simulate 5.1 from a stereo signal, you'll want one of the m-audio solutions or something like the griffin firewave. Of course these solutions mean you'll be plugging the sound card into a home theatre receiver with 5.1 capabilities. If you just want a "simulated" surround sound from everything, you might look into some "computer speaker" type solutions by logitec or creative that offer 5 speakers.
Something similiar to this: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z-530...228&sr=8-3

Couple months ago, I bought the Xmod by Creative, hooked it up to my 2.1 Logitech speaker and MDD G4 via USB. It works fine in this setup. Now, I got my hand to the original PowerMac G5 and Logitech 5.1 speakers (Z-5500) which also handles Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS 96/24, and Dolby Pro Logic via a TOSLINK optical cable.
Opening up 'Audio MIDI Setup' on my G5 and it only treated as stereo output (except the Apple DVD Player and VLC). After checking out the Griffin FireWave, it should be able to do/emulate 5.1 sound output by using the 'orange', 'black, and 'green' audio cables, right?
