1) The iPod is considerably smaller than I had imagined. It just looks bigger from the pics on the net. This is a good thing.

2) I have read alot about there not being enough BASS but I think there is plenty and actually wish that there was more treble or clarity. This may be the quality of my mp3's or maybe related to the provided headphones.

3) 1.35 GB (All my songs) took about 5 minutes to synch. I read somewhere that someone loaded their iPod full in 10 minutes, so mine was quite a bit slower, but still fast enough for me.

4) Found the Breakout game (go into the About menu and hold down the middle button for a few seconds until it appears) and it was OK. I hope in the future someone provides more games (space invaders etc). Actually, what would be sweet is if Apple but a color display in this thing, that would Rock!!

5) Dunno what the Hold switch does on the top yet...didn't take the time to dig into the manuels...i'll figure it out later..

6) Wish the headphone connection was not as bulky. It kinda sticks straight out of the top of the iPod about an inch when headphones are plugged in....I think it's waiting to be broken off, even though it seems pretty sturdy...

7) I wish the spinning wheel had set click spots in it. Meaning I wish it wasn't just a free spinning wheel, wish it would hold volume level etc. into place until some force was exerted on it....i can see that it will be in my pocket and rub against me and cause the volume level etc. to move....this would be a nice feature...agree?

8) you can actually feel the hard drive clicking into action when you select a new song to listen to...it's not drastic but it's there.....

9) headphones fit fine....some reports that they are too big...not in my case.....

10) I am going to plug it back up and use it as a hard drive to see how that works....

Overall Impression:
Really nice device.....Is it worth $399? No, I think a good price point for this is $299....

If you turn it on all the buttons on the iPod stop working so that they don't get pushed when in your pocket.

Yup!

I think it sounds great how it is.

Mine took only 10 min to fill the whole thing using it as a hard drive, I don't know if iTunes is slower...

I agree, but breakout does get addictive and it gets MUCH harder ....

You use it to make it so none of the buttons work (that way, if it's in your pocket, and you hit a button, it won't switch songs)

6) Wish the headphone connection was not as bulky. It kinda sticks straight out of the top of the iPod about an inch when headphones are plugged in....I think it's waiting to be broken off, even though it seems pretty sturdy...
The connecter is one of the smallest one's I have seen though, all my other headphones have like 2 in ones (Sony).

Nope, use the hold button.

8) you can actually feel the hard drive clicking into action when you select a new song to listen to...it's not drastic but it's there.....
That's good though, actaully saves your hd, because it spins up, loads into the ram, and then spins down, extending the life of the hd. However, I do wish the spin up time was a lot shorter, maybe like 1 sec, not 5-6 sec. This is my only problem with iPod, everything else is great!

9) headphones fit fine....some reports that they are too big...not in my case.....
They fit fine for me, too. Just took a little while figuring out how to stick them in real good and real fast.

10) I am going to plug it back up and use it as a hard drive to see how that works....
It works great! !

Don't agree with you here - $399 is a great price! Good minidisk player cost $300-$400, so it's really a steal (the hd inside it is work $399 alone, too!)

I agree with Karl.
Got my iPod last Friday, so I had it when I went to the Aspen Grove store's grand opening on the 10th. I've hardly put it down since. Right now it's playing thru a pair of Koss Pro 4AAA studio phones sitting on the desk. I can hear the tunes(Eurythmics, now) quite clearly from 6-8 feet away. Gonna head into Boulder in a few minutes and look for another set of ear buds...
This is a helluva toy, way to go Apple!
I think they hit the price perfect.

You're right, I saw the light coming through before, but didn't relize that that's a whole for dirt to get in! At least it's very small.

I made my housemates wake up at 6am to go to the Fashion Island grand opening 1 week ago. I got the iPod as a 40th birthday present (there is something good about growing old).

I took my iBook with 2.6 Gigs of music. I sat at a table just outside the Apple Store entrance, opened the box, hooked it up and was amazed. I actually didn't think the hype was real. Songs downloaded in minutes. While all that was happeing, I then opened the 'manual', glanced at it and threw it back in the bag...no need.

Like others, it has not left my side. I actually work at a help desk for Windows machines. The iPod is the envy of my coworkers and techs.

A funny thing, when the Windows people ask the price, they are impressed at how low it is. They think the iPod, with its small footprint and firewire/hard drive capabilities should cost more.

There are now 2 iPods in my house. My housemate without one keeps saying...'just because you have an iPod, doesn't make you a better person.'

It does!
